Hush visits Flinders Street Station

This is a really big train station in Melbourne, that covers about two city blocks.  Flinders Street Station as we know it opened in 1910 but there has been a train station here since 1854.   On weekdays around 110,000 people pass through here!  It’s a very big old building and I like the green roof, it’s almost the colour of gum leaves.  But, someone told me that it’s really made out of metal which has turned green in the weather.

Here is a picture of me standing under ‘the clocks’ (it’s a common Melbourne expression to say “Meet me at the clocks”).
Flinders Street Station is also just near the Little Bookroom’s Degraves Street store (how handy!).

Hush in Ballarat

Ballarat is a town about 105 kilometres outside of Melbourne.  In 1851 someone found gold here, which started a gold rush so lot’s more people came to live here and in 1871 it was officially made a city.  In 1854 there was an argument here called the “Eureka” uprising, which is really famous and they even made their own flag which is in the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery.  There are lot’s of pretty old buildings here in Ballarat too, and this great statue of Queen Victoria.  They also have some yummy bakeries where you can buy lamingtons (my favourite!).

Hush’s Travelogue

Hello, my name is Hush.  I decided that it was time to leave the bush where I’ve (nearly) always been and see a bit more of what goes on in human cities.  So, here I am in Melbourne.  It’s seems that this Australian city is most famous for good coffee and bad weather.  I’ve been here once before but, only for a quick stop so, I thought it would be a good idea to have a closer look.
You may have read another book about my travels with my grandmother, it’s called “Possum Magic”.  But, that was written by some one else and I wanted to have a go at writing my own story too.  It seems like every human who has ever been on holiday has written a book about it (ever heard of Eat, Pray, Love, Almost French or A Year in Provence), so why not a possum?  The nice ladies at The Little Bookroom said that they would help show me around Melbourne, because it’s hard for a little possum to find her own way in the big city.
It seems that these humans are very fond of their food!  Melbourne must have hundreds of places to eat human food from all over the world.  It is a little know fact that possums love human food.

Moomins in the window

Our Moomin window has been causing quite a stir in Degraves Street this weekend with squeals of delight being heard from people of all ages and in many languages!

If you haven’t met the Moomins yet, these wonderful books contain the most delightful philosophical little creatures.

Unfortunately, we have to explain that the toys are not for sale, they are the much cherished possessions of our Moomin corespondent.

A visit from John Flanagan and Friends (?)

John Flanagan is getting close to winding up his staggeringly successful Ranger’s Apprentice series. The eleventh book LOST STORIES – which was written in response to questions from readers – has just been published. And the twelfth, and final book, is a while away: John wants to be certain to tie up loose ends and deliver his fans a super-satisfying conclusion. He did confirm that the book would take place 15 years later and would feature the first ever female rangers. Yay!

The Skandians think John should get back to pillaging (or, as the Vikings say, ‘equally distributing the wealth’).

Worried about withdrawal? Fear not! John Flanagan has begun a new quest: the series is called The Outcasts and the first book, BROTHERBAND, is officially published on 1/11/11.

John Flanagan implores the well-mannered crowd to persist with their dreams while Wolf Blood-Drinker and Ulf Taxman-Eater look on at Preston Library.

Tex snuggles in, John wins the hearts of all Little Bookroomers.

We have limited signed copies of BROTHERBAND in store now.
